Hospital Sant Joan de Déu-Barcelona Children’s Hospital (HSJD) is one of the leading medical centers in Europe for childhood and adolescence and offers a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to health care from birth through 18 years of age. HSJD is a private not-for-profit center, working mainly for the National Health System offering the public contracted services.

HSJD combines basic general pediatrics with specialized care for all tertiary-level pediatric pathologies, in particular neuroscience, cardiology, endocrinology, infectious diseases, neonatology, oncology, and orthopedic surgery, covering a pediatric population of 200,000 children. Annually it attends more than 3.200 births, 25,470 in-patient admissions and 120,835 emergencies (representing 17% of pediatric population of Catalonia), with 306 beds, 134 outpatient rooms and 13 Operating rooms.

HSJD is ranked as the largest and the most renowned children’s hospital in Spain and one of the most recognized of its category across Europe, being ranked as the third European medical Centre of its kind by volume of activity. HSJD is accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Health as a reference center for all Spain in a wide range of specialties and conditions (e.g., orthopedics, neurology and neurosurgery, reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology). As the pediatric center of the University of Barcelona, HSJD is associated with the Clinic Hospital being the best-known hospital alliance in Spain and one of the international references for highly specialized hospital care, teaching and research.

The Department of Anesthesiology of Hospital Sant Joan de Déu is composed by a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the evaluation and management of children anxiety during the whole surgical process in outpatient ambulatory surgery. The Department has developed and implemented all sorts of techniques to achieve a decrease in the child’s anxiety such as careful preoperative assessment, administration of preoperative sedation, collaboration of medical clowns, presence of parents during anesthesia induction and several distraction techniques and evaluation of different scales (questionnaires).

The medical activities of the Department of Anaesthesiology of HSJD cover all sorts of ambulatory surgery: general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and traumatology, otolaryngologist, odontology and dermatology; we attend 4.000 surgeries per year. The Unit Structure of the Department of Anesthesiology is composed by two theatres, a Post-anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), two recovery and adaptation to the environment areas, secretary, reception area, calling center. From April 2016 we will open another theatre and another recovery area.
